Trimix 1 - La Jolla, San Diego, Ca

Day 1:

The class started at La Jolla beach where the students Nick A and Macieck A, met me at 9:00am and we started working with their two deco bottle procedures. Going through the techniques and drills needed to become proficient with not only switches but handling this many bottles. Luckily the day was flat, so shore entry with two deco bottles was easy. After about 90 mins of inwater drilling the students emerged tired and beatup. So, we returned to SDUA for fills and video debrief. During the debrief we covered some finer points of the bottle drills and watched their skills go south as we added bottles. It seemed as soon as we added that third (3)bottle their skills just fell apart and then of course the fourth bottle it just got worse. This really helped them see their limitation and the need for a small steps from their Technical Diver program to the Trimix diver program. We then followed the video debrief with lecture and dive planning. The emphasis in this class is not to plan a ridged dive plan but a more flexible plan knowing your limitation based on EAD, PPO2, Deco Gas and back gas. Then executing the dive and doing the deco on the fly.

The Devil's Crack - 450'/130m

 Objective:

The Red Sea Explorers Team decided to pick up and push the survey of a cave at Ras Mohamad, dubbed the "Devil's Eye", explored by a previous team of divers. After 4 days of exploration the team reached a maximum surveyed depth of 130 meters and laid 120 meters of penetration line. The survey stopped in an area (point D on the map) where the cave opened up and seemed to be an endless void. The results were published and the cave was dubbed "The Wakulla of the Red Sea".

After data and footage collected during an initial survey dive by the Red Sea Explorers team; Faisal Khalaf and Mo Hammoud (Mario), it is considered that the name "Wakulla" was misused as the cave was in fact a crack in the reef structure which would soon "wall out". We set out to prove that with the right tools, training and experience we could reach the end of the current line, cross the "void" and find the end of the cave or crack.

5thd-X "Mini's"

Introduction:

Mini's are an exciting new concept brought to you exclusively by 5thd-X.
A "Mini" is a one day workshop based on a specific topic from our 5thd-X curicula. It consists of a 2 hour rt1704.jpglecture and 2 in-water dives that will improve your knowledge and skills.

The concept of taking a Mini is to either better prepare yourself for one of our classes, add a new skill to your toolbox (such as line laying) or to continue to refine skills already learned. These "mini" workshops can help you gain everything from "start-up" knowledge to help you decide if particular equipment or education is right for you. They do not require purchase of additional equipment, as all necessary equipment is included. We believe the "Mini" is just one more way to benefit your diving future, fun, and safety!
